Tony Lippett just the latest in string of Miami Dolphins injuires

Tony Lippett is just another name added to the injured reserve list for the Miami Dolphins in 2017.

It hasn’t gotten any better for the Miami Dolphins in the past couple of weeks. Two starters from the 2016 campaign that led to a playoff birth have officially been put on injured reserve. Another couple of players that are new to the Dolphins roster in 2017 will be joining them.

The latest to be hit with the injury bug is cornerback Tony Lippett. A wide receiver-turned-cornerback took a huge stride in development last season starting 13 games over the course of the year. All it took was a torn Achilles tendon in practice yesterday to halt any chance for progression in 2017.

Omar Kelly of the Sun Sentinel broke down all the injuries that have occurred throughout camp thus far on Twitter and if you haven’t been following along, it’s not pretty:

The list, for this early in the season, can make one’s stomach churn. The biggest loss is obviously quarterback Ryan Tannehill who many thought would continue making strides underneath head coach Adam Gase. The losses of Raekwon McMillan and Ted Larsen hurt, too, as they were both expected to start and play pivotal roles in 2017.

With these losses means it’s time for players to step up. The purpose of training camp and preseason games is about finding out which players you’ve brought in over the offseason or carried over from last are ready to step up and play larger roles.

The Lippett injury, while hurts, may be the least of the worries. Second-year cornerback Xavien Howard is ready to step into a larger role after impressing throughout camp and start opposite Byron Maxwell. And players like Maurice Smith and Torry McTyer, along with veteran Alterraun Verner, could fill in for the injured Lippett. Lafayette Pitts is another great option but he’s lacked development in his second offseason in the NFL.

Miami could also opt to explore free agency as well. Although an unlikely option Darrelle Revis is still available. More players will be available once final cuts are made prior to the Sep. 3 deadline.
