OJ
McDuffie
3/24/03

OJ McDuffie was a
wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins. He was drafted by the Dolphins in
the first round (25th selection) and played for the team from 1993-2001.
In 1998 he led the NFL in receptions with 90. He played college football
for the Penn State Nittany Lions. OJ was forced to retire early due to an
injured toe. He was cleared by doctors to return too early after the
injury and the toe was damaged to the point where he could no longer play.
Phinatics.com
gives OJ McDuffie a special "THANK YOU" for his participation.
phinatics.com:
What are you doing now to keep yourself busy?
OJ McDuffie:
I have a 10 month old son. He keeps me real busy every single day. It's a
nice transition, you know what I mean? Leaving football to going into
being a father --- I needed that and it worked out well.
phinatics.com: You are still living in South Florida, right?
OJ McDuffie: Definitely,
South Florida's accepted me and I've accepted it, so it's my home probably for
life.
phinatics.com: Now that you're not running routes, how does that
problem toe feel?
OJ McDuffie:
It's feels a lot better
because I don't stop and go like I used to. It's a lot better. But if I go out
and play basketball, I pay for it a couple of days --- but I get over it.
phinatics.com: Any news on the lawsuit?
OJ McDuffie: No.
Everything is status quo. I don't even really ... that's my lawyers ...
they handle all that stuff and they call me up with some updates. But
nothing major, nothing new.
phinatics.com: You did not sue the Dolphins though, is that
correct?
OJ McDuffie: I would
never do that. The Dolphins, they showed me too much love,
you know. It's just a situation where I could still be playing. I
could still be playing. The doctor took food out of my son's mouth right
now, you know what I mean? That's the biggest deal about the whole thing.
phinatics.com: Did the NFL have any insurance for you for that kind
of thing?
OJ McDuffie:
Actually, since I played
on another year, I lost all my insurance on my foot so I didn't get that.
That will come up in the lawsuit as well.
phinatics.com: What do you think about the situation with Oronde
that is going on right now?
OJ McDuffie: Personally,
I think it is a bunch of BS. Oronde has been such a great
receiver for this organization and for them to treat him like he's never done
anything for them is amazing. It's amazing. Hopefully they will do
the right thing. I mean they bring in another receiver to try and make Oronde
feel a little pressure, but Oronde --- Oronde makes quarterbacks look good.
He made a lot of quarterbacks look good, you know what I mean? So, we will
see what happens.
phinatics.com: Please tell me about your golf tournament.
OJ McDuffie: It's April
4th and 5th. A Pairings Party will be held at Gatsby's in Davie and the
tournament is at Inverrary Golf Club. It's going to be nice -- a real nice
tournament.
phinatics.com: How can people get information on participating?
OJ McDuffie:
They
have to call the
Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation down here and ask for Debbie Gephart, and she'll take
care of everything.
phinatics.com: And you're watching the Dolphins still, right?
OJ McDuffie: Always, I
have season tickets still.
