Some of you Fins Fans perhaps…hmm.hmm?
The answer: What you are seeing now. For all the “Nay-sayers” the “I knew its” and most importantly the “Typicals” I am excited to write…you are wrong. This friends, is not typical. Over the last decade we have seen some pretty bad Miami seasons to the point it no longer surprises us. To say some of us did not expect much this season would most certainly be an understatement.
I thought about it this morning and actually my wife said it at a very ill-timed moment last night. She asked me “at least it wasn’t a blow out like you expected, that has to help right?” Since I despise and would never condone domestic violence, even if it’s a Dolphins player (or former) doing it, I settled for the simple head nod and a sulky “yep.”
However, she was absolutely right! Yesterday I wasn’t expecting a win or even a close game for that matter. After all some “experts” already see the Cards going to the bowl…in week 3?…buncha $%^&*!..Anyway, what I got instead was watching a team bounce back from a frustrating loss and a franchise, who has seen more changes in the last decade than any other in the NFL, come out fighting to win. Interestingly some could argue that many of the more positive and profound changes within that time have taken place in the last four weeks; look close. I know its a stretch but the speed, timing, aggressiveness, the attitude, even the energy of the players seems to be changing as the seasons moves on without us. Look close and you can see measurable performance changes between games. That is in-season progress folks the likes of which many of us have not seen in a long time. Philbin has them productively working during the week! Of course I’m upset we lost but today I feel something I can’t say I have in a while…real no BS hope. I actually believe that the mistakes that were made will actually be fixed and not patched by some gimmick play or a day off. The team is RIGHT THERE and we have not legitimately been “right there” in a long time. Coach seems to have a plan and it appears he is a lot of things no other coach has been since 1996.
Break it down from the most recent: Does not chest pump field goals-Holds practices with players actually there-Will not wimp back out to a collegiate level- Doesn’t have a brostache- Was never voted off Survivor. Nuff’ said
OK, obviously I am kidding. There is enough “in depth-break it down” blogs out there and that’s not what I am about. The point to all this is simple. Something feels different. The Dolphins are 1-3; yet for the first time we really shouldn’t be. We are a 3-1 team at the top of our division. This in the first year of another rebuild and we seriously should be 3-1 and not by a “if this and this and this happened”…but by a mere one “if this happened.” In Coach Spara…I’m not saying his name after his behavior during the Jest game (intentionally misspelled)…In that coaches first season there was a flash point and we made the playoffs. In my humble-nobody opinion I get a strange calm of continuity with Philbin. When the package is finally put together the way he wants it to be I think it could truly make Hootie cry. It is only week 4 but he seems to have come in with a plan before training camp, HK showed him methodically putting together that plan and now in a short 4 weeks he is ironing it out. The wrinkles are obvious and let’s hope he gets them resolved this time finally with lasting results. Mind the laundry analogy.
The last few weeks we have seen a team that doesn’t play for the field goal… There seems to be a plan to win games and take it to the opposing team. However, let’s not forgot where we thought we would actually be and that is watching a 1-3 Miami Dolphins team. Of course “we are”… yet…we really aren’t. I am in no way suggesting we all sink to some kind of melancholy low expectation for the season, Hell I still think we can make the playoffs. What I am saying is that when games unfold the way the last two have we should all remember it wasn’t expected to be this close to begin with. Torturous yes; but it appears the clouds are finally breaking up. I wonder what we’ll be expecting next season…or for that matter the remainder of this season. The team appears much further ahead than many had thought.
A winning record is what we all want but over the years I have come to expect the one we currently have, yet surprisingly I was not expecting the way in which we got it.
