Interview with Dan Marino
05/01/02

Dan Marino was a quarterback
for the Miami Dolphins from 1983-1999. Dan holds 37 Dolphin regular season team
records and is tied for 5 others. He also holds 24 NFL regular season records
and is tied for six others. Three records he holds--- that are going to be
near impossible to beat --- are his 420 career TD passes, 48 TD passes in one
season ('84), and his 61,361 career passing yards. He played college football
for Pittsburgh.
This interview was conducted at
the
Bruno's Memorial Classic Golf
Tournament held in Birmingham, AL.
Several of the questions were asked by other reporters.
Reporter: Dan, how'd you play?
Dan Marino: I played pretty good, I don't exactly know
what I shot, but I was close to even par somewhere. I had a good time, and the
course is in real good shape and it's holding play, and I'm just glad to be a
part of this.
Reporter: How often do you play?
Dan Marino: Right now, this time of year, I play a lot, because it's the
slow time for me I guess. Once the season starts I'll be doing television, so I
won't have much chance to play, but this time of year I do play a lot.
Reporter: Did you get a chance to talk to Aikman out
here today?
Dan Marino: I haven't seen him; he had a different tee time, and I haven't
had a chance to see him yet.
Reporter: How well do you guys know each other?
Dan Marino: I know Troy, you know, from a lot of the things that
quarterbacks do together in the off-season and different things. Yeah, I know
Troy pretty good.
phinatics.com: How
did you shoot in the Dolphins Alumni Golf Tourney last Monday?
Dan Marino: We won.
phinatics.com: Who else did you play with?
Dan Marino: With Rob Konrad ... it was a good time.
Reporter: Is this your first time here Dan?
Dan Marino: No, I have been here before. I've been up here to this course,
and I played Shoal Creek before.
Reporter: How do you like it here?
Dan Marino: I like it. Good time, good people.
Reporter: Tell us a little bit about what you are doing now that you are
out of the game, and how you spend your time besides golf tournaments?
Dan Marino: You have a lot of things going on in your life; I got a bunch of
kids so you always gotta take care of them. Last night I had a roller blade
hockey game and a basketball game I had to go to, and my daughters ride horses.
So, there is always something going on when you don't have a real job, which my
real job is TV just like you guys --- its not a real job (smiles). That's what
I do now. So, you try as spend as much time as you can with the kids.
Reporter: You not interested in coaching little league
or something like that?
Dan Marino: No, I couldn't coach because the parents would hate me, and the
kids would hate me too (smiles).
Reporter: Are you living in South Florida?
Dan Marino: I live in South Florida, yeah.
phinatics.com: How excited were your kids when you told
them they were getting another baby sister?
Dan Marino: They were excited about it because our first daughter was such a
great little girl, and she has been a great experience for us. So they were
excited, and our new baby is so great. Thanks, thanks for asking.
Reporter: How many children in all now?
Dan Marino: Six, and two were adopted.
phinatics.com: Any of your boys playing golf with you?
Dan Marino: My youngest boy plays some golf, and he hits it pretty good.
He's a knucklehead though; he doesn't know how to get it in the hole yet. He
just wants to hit driver all the time (laughs).
phinatics.com: What do you think about the
Dolphins chances this season?
Dan Marino: I think they are going to be an excellent
football team. They've always had a good defense the last few years, and
offensively, with Norv Turner, I think it's going to help them a lot. He's
always had a great knack for calling the right plays at the right time. And
Ricky Williams, I don't think they would have been able to get a guy in the
draft like him, so he's worth the draft picks. You know, I told Wannstedt after
17 years they finally get a running back; what happened when I was playing
(laughs)?
